ARE YOU SCAM SAVY?

By now, we know there is no money in stuffing envelopes and that dialing area codes 809, 284 and 876 does not cost $2,500 a minute (though it may cost you a pretty penny). We even know that a former minister of finance from Nigeria is not going to pay us in exchange for transferring millions of dollars into our bank account.

But con artists are developing more sophisticated online scams, say Internet experts. Audri Lanford, co-director of scambusters.org, says a friend with a doctorate recently asked her if Bill Gates was going to send her $245 for each e-mail she forwarded. Read More...

Story Search Reveals Google Glitch

Tom Giordano, Correspondent - January 06, 2005

When Kraft Foods Inc. learned that its company name and Web address appeared as a sponsored link after a search on a pro-white Web site, company officials said they were appalled.

Kraft Foods isn’t the only prominent company that appeared at the Web site as a sponsored link, thanks to Google Inc.’s free search engine. Depending upon which keyword was used to search the site, other notable companies popped up, including Amazon.com, Wal-Mart, Jennie-O and Bass Pro Shops, as well as Jewish organizations, the NAACP, African-American companies and religious groups.

In short, corporations and organizations that would not knowingly connect themselves to a white supremacist group were listed as sponsored links on this organization’s search page. And this situation is repeated on Web sites throughout the Internet that use Google’s free search engine.

Rich Media Takes Hold, But Past E-Business Lessons Won't Be Forgotten

A growing array of applications and business needs are driving acceptance of rich media, but companies once burned by the dot-com bust will cast a more skeptical eye on investments that don't directly deliver business benefits.
By Jim Nash

Growing acceptance of rich-media online advertising and content is convincing a growing number of companies--and, more important, consumers--that the static Web page will soon be as relevant as spats.

Boosters of sites brimming with full-motion video, audio, and animation have for years talked about bandwidth as the one factor holding rich media back. This year, by most accounts, broadband connections for Internet connectivity became a minimum standard for a critical mass of businesses and consumers.

So, is it time to invest in rich media? Read more . . .

Business 2.0 January 2004 Talk Back – COMPETING VISIONS:

I was dismayed to read that your magazine views the future of seamless computing as “Gatesian” (“The Vision Thing Again”, Titans of Tech, December). Frankly, in my world of PHP, LINUX, MySQL, and other open-source tools, we have been living in a seamless computing environment for quite some time. Likewise, my Handspring Treo 600 synchronizes quickly to my Apple G4 laptop, and, via iCal, to many of the computers I use. Granted, none of these are Microsoft products, but then again, I am trying to get some work done. The fact is, Microsoft products play well only with other Microsoft products, stifling innovation for the rest of us. If it weren’t for the folks who are truly innovative, Microsoft development platforms wouldn’t work on any other platforms other than Microsoft’s. If you want to find real innovation, talk tot he people who are in the trenches daily, writing non-bloated code that’s solving real business problems today. The only thing that’s stuck in a “vacuum of vision” is Bill Gates Himself.

Tricks of the Trade - An Expert Guard His Time
Charles Passy, The Wall Street Journal 1/8/03

It's an irritation that everyone from lawyers to car mechanics has to face: getting hit up by friends and family members for free expert advice. Jeffrey Cohen, chief executive of the web-site development company, ImageWorks LLC, gets pleas for technical help every day, from bad circuit boards to viruses. Once, the chef at a restaurant where he was eating found out he worked for a tech company and popped by his table to ask about a memory upgrade. Needless to say, he has had to establish some ground rules. He often limits conversations to five minutes, and doesn't waste time with complete novices (he tells them to pick up a "for Dummies" book). Mr. Cohen generally says no to house calls - and charges a fee if the work runs a couple of hours. He also flees if he finds out that people are consulting multiple "experts", like the friend who enlisted three techies, including him, to get rid of his pop-up ads. Of course, there are exceptions to all this, like when his mother needed e-mail help. "What am I going to do, tell her no?"

Learn New Ways to Work the Web The Internet has not, as some predicted done away with traditional commerce. Instead, it has evolved into a versatile communication tool that puts a business at its customers' fingertips.

Think your customers don't use the Web? If so, you might want to think again. Although people may not do all of their shopping on the Web, they don't hesitate to use it. They log on to research car and home purchases, find health information, check the stock market or read the latest news. It stands to reason that the art-conscious among them also would seek out information on art media and framing techniques.
